Tree-planting in Bwaise
In the heart of Bwaise, where the hum of the city meets the resilience of its people, small hands will one day pluck fruit from the branches we planted. On 28th June 2024, we stepped away from construction sites and blueprints to do something different: plant trees, plant hope, and stand in solidarity with a group of remarkable young women.
This was no ordinary tree planting. It was part of the launch of a catch-up school for child mothers and survivors of sexual violence, a place designed to give them a second chance at education, vocational training, and a safe space to rebuild their futures.
Why Trees? Why Here?
Bwaise, like many urban areas, faces challenges—flooding, heat, and limited green spaces. Trees won’t fix everything, but they’ll help. They’ll offer shade in the scorching sun, fruit for nourishment, and stronger soil to fight erosion. More than that, they’ll stand as symbols of growth, resilience, and care—just like the young girls this school supports.
We planted with guidance, following a process designed to give these trees the best possible start:
– Digging deep, rich beds to anchor their roots.
– Pairing saplings with herbs to retain moisture.
– Building protective fences to keep them safe.
– Assigning ‘Green Guardians’—locals who will nurture them long after we’ve left.
To us as Marigold, this was more than a CSR activity. It was a reminder that our work is more than just building, it’s about improving welfare of our communities, too. Long after the last hole was filled, we left with muddy hands, full hearts, and the hope that in the years to come, these trees will grow tall, offering shelter, sustenance, and a quiet kind of strength.
